Why I use 100% natural gem stone for knife handles:

Before going any further let me give you a few definitions:

Lapidary - (adjective) relating to precious and semi-precious stone or the art of working with them

Lapidarist - (noun) an expert on precious and semi-precious stone and the art of cutting and engraving them

L
apidist - (noun) a person who has the skill to cut, carve, sculpt and polish precious and semi-precious stone for use
as jewelry or other applications

Now, I am a Lapidarist at heart and Lapidist by trade, which means, I know stone, I only work with stone and I
could not recommend anything else for a knife handle and here’s why . . .

Mother Nature is the be all and end all when it comes to artistic handiwork and her palate is our earth.  She has
spent thousands and thousands of years putting together the most beautiful and durable of her art in stone.  All of
her artistic stone work is unique so when you see pieces of the same type stone, you will see completely different
patterns and colors. The basic makeup is the same at the molecular level but she shades the colors and works the
patterns so that no two slices of stone are ever alike. It is this unique quality of stone that thrills me to work with it
because there is something new to discover each and every time. For you, it means no one will have the exact same
knife. Oh the knife frame may be the same but the handle will be forever unique to you.

Durability is the next reason stone is the obvious choice for a knife handle. I only use the hardest gem stone (Agates
and Jaspers) I can find. You have to consider that if a stone holds up to the punishing procedure it takes to be
molded to fit the knife handle, it will hold up to anything you can dish out. All other handle materials can and do
crack, chip or just fall apart over time; this includes man-made materials such as celluloid and plastics, also natural
materials like bone, horn, ivory, pearl and abalone. A second reason gem stone is durable is that it is impervious to
other materials like petroleum products (oil and gas), chemicals, corrosives and water.

Many Knifemakers who claim to use gem stone are really using something else. They may call what they use by a
generic name like ‘reconstituted’ stone, ‘stabilized’ stone or ‘composite’ stone. It could be called a brand name like
“Recon Stone”, “Larmar Stone”, or “Syntho-Tech”.  It doesn’t matter what name they call the material being used to
make a knife handle because these Knifemakers are putting handles on your knife that are all man made mixtures of
both natural crushed stone and acrylic resin made for knife and jewelry makers which provides an inexpensive
alternative to the much more expensive 100% natural gem stone. None of these products require the use of lapidary
equipment and are cheap imitations.

We all buy knives for one of two reasons; you are going to put it up as a collectible or you’re going to use it. If my
knives are purchased as a collectible, it will be an heirloom and will be handed down for generations to come as
long as the metal is taken care of because the gem stone handle can outlast the metal. My knives can be used and
the handle will hold up to any job or requirement your knife may have.

Purchasing and owning a knife from Stone Art Custom Knives is simple and straight forward as the following
guarantees show:

  1. I only use 100% natural gem stone just as Mother Nature made it.
  2. If your knife handle ever fails, I will replace it.
  3. If your knife handles ever chip or crack, I will fix it or replace it.
